With cuts and layoffs announced all over the world people are starting to wonder: do we really need public libraries anymore?

Customers will be able to borrow Kindle books from over 11,000 local libraries to read on Kindle and free Kindle reading apps

Whispersyncing of notes, highlights and last page read to work for Kindle library books

SEATTLE, Apr 20, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- (NASDAQ: AMZN)-- Amazon today announced Kindle Library Lending, a new feature launching later this year that will allow Kindle customers to borrow Kindle books from over 11,000 libraries in the United States. Kindle Library Lending will be available for all generations of Kindle devices and free Kindle reading apps.

"We're excited that millions of Kindle customers will be able to borrow Kindle books from their local libraries," said Jay Marine, Director, Amazon Kindle. If a Kindle book is checked out again or that book is purchased from Amazon, all of a customer's annotations and bookmarks will be preserved.

But we're extending our Whispersync technology so that you can highlight and add margin notes to Kindle books you check out from your local library. Your notes will not show up when the next patron checks out the book. This past summer, SNAP put the “Fun” in reading is fundamental!
Through a unique collabora-tion with the Brentwood Public Library, SNAP was able to offer a summer reading program for young-sters in the Brentwood community. In an effort to promote early literacy skills and peer mentoring, sev-eral SNAP students served as “Book Buddies” for elementary-school aged children. Each Monday during July and August, students assembled to read, learn, and grow from one another. High school students who had been active in SNAP’s programs at the Freshman Center and the High School were invited to donate some of their time to working with younger students, helping them with their reading skills. It was a wonderful opportunity for younger students to learn from their older peers while simultaneously strengthening their reading capabilities. Books of all sorts were explored, from fiction to non-fiction and everything in between. 2010 marked the fourth straight summer that SNAP provided such a program and the momentum has helped the program to market itself! Several students were inquiring about Book Buddies even before the summer began, which speaks volumes about their dedication and commit-ment to serving as youth leaders, mentors, and the foundation of their community. It takes a very spe-cial kind of person to positively influence a young and impressionable mind and SNAP students have displayed time and time again, that they possess that special personality trait. Said Brentwood High School SNAP student Dorian Drummond: “I enjoy working with the kids be-cause it makes me feel great inside to know that I’m affecting the younger generation in a positive way, it’s invaluable.” It was truly an honor for Mr. Fox, Mr. Grotell, and Mr. Weinstein to work with these young people and we look forward to continuing quality programming throughout the 2010-2011 school year.

This digital branch employs social media and other web apps to feature library-created content and push or feed that content to users. Because the content is dynamic, it continually changes keeping the user interested and encouraging return visits.

You can think of Līve-brary.com as a department store with many products for sale inside. If you want to buy shoes, coats, furniture, and linens, you could go to four individual stores. Help us protect NY’s libraries and library systems. We need to tell the NYS Legislature to reject the $2.4 million cut in Library Aid Governor David Paterson is proposing in the 2010-2011 Executive Budget.
This will be the fifth cut in less than two years and will bring Library Aid down from $102 million in 2007 to $84.5 million in 2010. These cuts combined total an $18 million or 18% reduction in funding for library services. Libraries are part of our safety net—they are essential to life long learning, jobs and opportunity, quality of life and community empowerment

Send Call Numbers Via Text Message
Beginning tomorrow users will be able to send title, location, and call number information from the Catalog directly to their cell phones via text message.
To use this service, patrons will need to click on the “Send Via Text Message” button below the list of items on the Bibliographic display. They will be prompted to enter their phone number, carrier, and select an item to send information for. Once they click Send, the message will be sent to their phone in a text message.
Please note: If the bibliographic display has an item with no call number listed, the message cannot be sent. The button will just disappear when it is clicked.
What is this used for?
Frequently Asked Questions:
As users become more and more attached to their phones, many people may find this service a convenient method for:
taking note of a call number and location before going to find it in the library’s stacks
librarians sending information on an item to a patron
asking family members or friends to pick an item up for you at the library
reminding yourself of items you’d like to check out later
What information is included on the text message?
The message comes from the account sclsod@suffolk.lib.ny.us, and looks a bit like this:
Subject: From the Library Catalog Loc: (Location) Call: (Call Number) Title: (Title)

Can people add additional information to the text message?
A text message must be 160 characters or fewer. There would not be enough space to add any additional information.
Are there any charges associated with this service?
While sending a message in this way is a free service, users may be charged for the text message, depending on their mobile plans. The following message displays just aboue the “Send” button for this feature: NOTE: Carrier charges may apply if you cell phone service plan does not include free text messaging.
When I click on the button, it just disappears! What happened?
This happens when there is not enough information in the item record to send the text. Usually, this means that there is an item attached with no call number.

We are thrilled to have received a commitment from Doris Kearns Goodwin to appear at the 2009 Long Island Reads "One Island, One Book" author event. Ms. Goodwin will discuss her book Wait Till Next Year on May 6th at the Brentwood Public Library
Ms. Goodwin will sign books, and books will be available for purchase at the library.Tickets are available on April 1st from the county systems.

The proposed 2009-10 Executive Budget includes an $18 million or 18% cut in Library Aid on top of the cuts imposed in April and August of 2008. This would reduce Library Aid to $80.5 million - a level not seen since 1993.

and click on the Contact Your Elected Officials icon to send a fax or email to your state legislators and the Governor protesting this cut in Library Aid.

Libraries are willing to do their fair share in addressing the state's fiscal crisis and we have done our part already, twice in 2008, but now it is time for others to do their fair share, before asking the library community to do more.

In Memoriam, Doris Sargeant

It is with regret that the Brentwood Public Library Board of Trustees and staff wishes to notify our patrons that Doris Sargeant passed away last night. She will be waked on Tuesday, 7/29/08, at The Branch Funeral Home, 190 E. Main Street, Smithtown, NY (724-9500). The wake will be from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A religious service will be held at 8:00 pm, following by presentations by the Rotary Club and the Businessman's Association.

Directions: Take the LIE to Exit #56N (Route #111). Go four miles to the intersection of Route #111 and Route #25. Make a right turn onto Route #25 East. Go 500 feet to the funeral home which will be on the right-hand side. Or, you can take Sunrise Highway to Route #111N and then follow the above directions.

A service will be held on Wednesday morning, July 30, 2008, at 11:00 am, at the Brentwood Presbyterian Church, 127 Third Avenue, Brentwood, NY (273-3152). A reception will follow at the Fellowship Hall.
